Landfill Liquid Control Application Note

Intrinsically Safe Submersible Transmitter to Control Liquid Seepage
Application: Disposal of Liquid Seepage at a Landfill

Problem: Many landfills are made up of a series of non-permeable cells used to hold the fill. A separate semi-permeable barrier is positioned several feet from the inner walls of the each cell allowing natural runoff and rainwater to seep through the barrier and accumulate in the bottom of the cell. The liquid seepage then has to be eliminated.

Solution: AMETEK model 575F Intrinsically Safe Submersible Pressure Transmitter

A Model 575 Intrinsically Safe Submersible Transmitter and a meter/controller are used to eliminate the liquid seepage. The transmitter is positioned in the bottom of the cell by means of a PVC pipe. Both the transmitter and a local pump are connected to the meter/controller. The transmitter sends a signal representing the level of liquid to the meter/ controller and, at the desired level, the meter/controller activates the pump. The pump then expels the liquid to a holding tank for future treatment and disposal.
